Cayman's cosmopolitan nature allows us to stay on top of international trends, and while we have long been home to a few well-loved locally grown coffee houses, the continuing evolution of cafe culture seen globally has been percolating locally too.
Over hundreds of years, a long-standing tradition has formed around the act of gathering for a coffee. From the near-ceremonial and ritualistic kissaten in Japan, lanchonetes in Brazil, hygge in Denmark, or the pastane in Turkey, to the rushed almost-addiction fuelled experience of American and Canadian coffee shops, modern trends are driving a new style of coffee culture in Cayman.
The latest wave has emerged in response to a new breed of connoisseurs and eco-minded consumers demanding the highest quality brews and ethically sourced beans. These new trends and technologies are taking hold in cafe circles and being heralded by baristas as the best thing since the french press.
Although not quite the world capital of ‘coffee-crazy’ Seattle (with 35 coffee shops per 100,000 citizens!), Grand Cayman boasts many cafe-style spots. Whether looking for grab-and-go morning fuel, a laid-back date night, a neutral zone to have intellectual debates, or a temporary work space for a productive afternoon, Cayman offers coffee drinkers an increasingly diverse selection of cafes and coffees shops to choose from.
