Paradise for vegans

Real Caymanian cooking

Being a vegan in Cayman, or even just a straight forward vegetarian, is not easy as there are not many dining choices available. However, if you have not already found Miss Janel at Roots Delight you need to visit her small take out restaurant in the Cayman Center. Her whole focus is centred around healthy living and eating and her Veggie wraps and smoothies are delicious. If you are a vegan, you won't be disappointed.

Many of the local restaurants in Cayman serve a mix of local dishes and West Indian or Jamaican dishes. However two restaurants that stand out are Driftwood and Everglo. Driftwood, just two miles from Rum Point, claims to be the only 'local' restaurant in Cayman offering real Caymanian cooking. Everglo, just after Bodden Town, offers a wider selection of Caribbean cooking but Buddy grows many of his ingredients locally. You will often be able to sample fresh juices or even purchase his own jams and jellies which makes a great alternative to more commercially available products.

Rockfish replaces Harry's
Durty Reid's - End of an Era?

Harry's Caribbean Bar and Grill used to have a reputation as a great local restaurant and bar, but sadly, for personal reasons, the restaurant had to be shutdown. Luckily however the Rockfish Lounge has taken its place and continues to offer a fun and lively local bar and restaurant with an updated and affordable menu. Click Rockfish for more information.

Durty Reid's has been an institution for Caymanians since 1989, but its forced relocation, due to infrastructure improvements (namely the extension of the road to Savannah and the bulldozing of the Red Bay Plaza (July 07)) has not gone well. After one year at Pedro St. James, (Durty) Reid Dennis threw in the towel (Nov 08) as his clientele significantly dropped off during the week. Watch this space and we will inform you as soon as we know if Durty Reid's will be revived to live another day.

Cayman's first rum
Good Taste reaches 1 million hits

Co-Founders Michael Kennedy, Nelson Dilbert and Walker Romanica launched a new Cayman Islands Rum on 1st May 2008, called Seven Fathoms. Uniquely the rum is matured underwater and will be marketed in the super premium category. Walker Romanica said, "we are able to take advantage of the kinetic properties of the ocean tides and currents to create a very unique flavour profile and a remarkably smooth rum". Refined locally in Cayman, Seven Fathoms has taken several years to come to the market and initially will only be available in small quantities.

The Good Taste website reached a new milestone of a million hits per month in January 2008. Charles Grover, Publishing Director at Acorn Publishing attributed the huge increase in visitors to the partnership with the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism and the fact that the website has become recognised as the most comprehensive source of dining information in the Cayman Islands.
